Glass surfaces such as telescope lenses pointing to the clear sky are prone to having dew forming on the lens during the night - especially if its humid. They also tend to capture stray light, which reduces the contrast of the target.
As many astronomers and astrophotographers have experienced, on clear nights, dew is often a real problem and if it forms on your lens it can render your nights observing session over. After only a very short time, the optics can start fogging, making viewing or photography impossible. A good dew shield reduces the risk of fogging and extends the observing time. Note: on extremely humid nights, dew heaters will also be required. Dew shields are not required for Newtonian reflectors.
Lateral stray light from street lights can also enter the lens which reduces contrast and often cause unwanted reflections in photographs. These dew shields are also blackened out inside with non reflective felt, to help prevent stray light from entering the telescope.
Features:
- These dew shields are available in various diameters
- The velcro fasteners are sewn and cannot detach. The dew shields themselves are made from weather-proof and non-ageing plastic.
- These dew shields are extra flexible, the retentive area for the Velcro is much broader than the from many other designs. This offers a larger retentive area and also a better adaption to the diameter of your telescope.
- Once attached to the tube, they hold very well. The contact surfaces to the tube are coated with a non-slip foam rubber.
- They can be combined with dew heaters on extremely humid nights.
