What is an atmospheric dispersion corrector:
An ADC corrector is a small unit that corrects the refraction of light in the atmosphere. For example, a large object like Jupiter has a red and blue color fringe and also appears distorted. This effect is caused by the refraction of light in the Earths atmosphere which acts like a prism. This effect becomes more prominent, depending on how high the object is above the horizon. The deeper the object is, the stronger the effect comes into play. Since especially in northern countries the planets are only very low, the effect here is particularly strong, and the corrector is particularly worthwhile here.
How does the ZWO ADC corrector work?
Our atmosphere refracts the light to varying degrees, depending on the wavelength. Red light is refracted differently than blue light. The closer the object is to the horizon, the stronger the effect. With the adjustment levers on the ADC, you adjust the two prisms in the corrector and thus counteract the effect of the Earth's atmosphere, neutralizing this color shift. this makes a huge difference to the clarity and sharpness of your images.
Important Tip for use:
- For the maximum effect, the corrector must be correctly oriented to the horizon. This is usually the case when the superimposed handles of the compensator are parallel to the horizon line in the focuser.
- It should be noted that in the case of equatorially mounted telescopes, the position to the horizon changes over time, which must of course be taken into account.
